R-5769, Novo Nordisk New Access
NCDOT project R-5769 (0.6 miles) provided an access road to the proposed Novo Nordisk plant expansion near Clayton in Johnston County. The access road connects from SR 1950 (Gordon Road) and includes a grade separated crossing of the North Carolina Railroad/Norfolk Southern Railroad and then leads into the new Novo Nordisk plant. The project was designed to meet NCDOT standards, with a typical section consisting of a two 12’ lane roadway with 8’ shoulders (2’ paved) and 40 mph design speed. The single span bridge is 33’-3” out to out with 54” AASHTO girders on 8’ 7” centers, has a span length of 113.5 feet, and MSE walls. The project also included intersection design and addition of turn lanes at the intersection of SR 1950 and the access road. WEI’s scope on this project included surveying, roadway design, intersection design, pavement marking, hydraulic design, erosion control, structure design, traffic control, and utility coordination. This project involved extensive coordination with North Carolina Railroad and Norfolk Southern for the grade separated structure over the railroad and coordination between NCDOT, Novo Nordisk, and the designer of the site plans for the plant expansion (Fluor) to meet an accelerated schedule. The project was completed in six months and let in nine months. |
