I-5506, I-40/Aviation Parkway Interchange Modification

Under an on-call contract with NCDOT, Wetherill Engineeringprovided planning, corridor modeling, NEPA documentation(Categorical Exclusion Document), public involvement,functional plans, preliminary design, and right of way plansfor this interchange modification project. The purpose of theproject is to eliminate the long queue extending out onto I-40,resulting from the heavy left-turn movement during peak periodsat Aviation Parkway.

The project involves a new off-ramp and loop from I-40westbound to Aviation Parkway southbound in the northwestquadrant of the existing interchange. The existing on-ramp fromAviation Parkway northbound to I-40 westbound will be relocatedand lengthened to allow the proposed loop be constructed in thequadrant. The project will replace the existing bridge on AviationParkway over I-40, adding sidewalks and widening the new bridge.The I-40 westbound off-ramp terminal to Aviation Parkway willbe modified to eliminate the left-turn movement to Aviation Parkway southbound.
